Video Series: Embracing the Cross through Dance

By Kathy Keary

Our full series in the Contemplative Prayer Video Series is here.

In our video last week, we talked about the power of uniting our cross with the Cross of Christ as a path to the new life offered in the Resurrection. The people of Ukraine are enduring a horrendous cross. We share in that cross as we watch the atrocities and bloodshed of innocent people day after day. It is taking an emotional toll on us as we witness this unimaginable brutality. As written in St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians: “If one part suffers, all parts suffer with it” (12:26a).

The first step to uniting our cross with that of Christ is to embrace the emotions that surface during challenging times. Last week we expressed these emotions and prayed for the people of Ukraine through art. This week I invite you to involve your body as you express all that is stirring within you. Dance allows for a passionate expression of the emotions that beg to be released.

We will watch a video of ordinary people expressing themselves through dance in everyday settings. Notice the emotion that the people are expressing by their movements. Feel the power that the dance offers.

I invite you to incorporate your body as you express what lies within you. Notice the healing effect that dance has on the soul. Offer your dance as a prayer for the people of Ukraine.

Join us next week as we continue our journey through Lent.

May the people of Ukraine feel the loving embrace of God and the warmth of our heartfelt prayers.
